i have criticized many series in the past for the “stand there and let stuff happen” trope but in this case it’s perfectly understandable, at least for MC
like think for a moment, he is fully aware that the demon far outclasses him AND his preemptive strike failed. he is in no position to be going on the offensive with reckless abandon and the thing he resolves to do is something he’d prefer not to unless given no choice. add to that the concern over collateral and him abstaining from engaging the demon makes sense
